During the 2007 AJFO Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, Mississippi was selected to host the 13th National AJFO Conference. The national and state steering committees are busy planning a terrific conference. AJFO is the premier conference for professionals working with female offenders in the adult and juvenile system. AJFO has a rich history dating back to l985. A grassroots movement began to provide a forum for women and men in the corrections professions to come together every other year and share information and concerns regarding the needs, management and treatment of female offenders.

The 2009 conference theme, “Harmony Beyond Boundaries, Blending New Challenges with Emerging Ideas”, is especially appropriate as we come together for a national conference to address the issues related to adult and juvenile female offenders. The conference agenda will spotlight information from around the country, and offer time to network and learn from professionals recognized for their years of work related to female offenders. We have made efforts at our local, state and national level to manage the issues related to the increasing number of female offenders. We look forward to moving beyond boundaries to share these accomplishments.

The conference web site can be viewed at: http://ajfo.org.

The “Call for Presenters” is published under the agenda. Please submit your presentations as soon as possible. The agenda is a work in progress but we plan to spotlight programs that are making a difference in the work we do with the female population. We need your state to showcase their programs. Please feel free to suggest presenters you would like to hear.
Hosting a National conference is a huge undertaking! AJFO is hosted every other year by a different state and is co-sponsored by The Association on Programs for Female Offenders. National response has been overwhelming! The conference now attracts approximately 500+ participants from across the United States and Canada. We look forward to having great attendance in Jackson.

To meet financial obligations of hosting such a large conference, we rely upon the generosity and support from companies, businesses, community organizations, and individuals. We need sponsorships and/or assistance in order to:

*Secure Keynote Speakers *Plan meals & receptions *Transportation

Costs of the various events range in price from $1,000 to $15,000. There are needs at each level of support and every dollar will be used to enhance the conference. Sponsorship packets and information can be printed from the web site.

The Jackson Marriott Hotel & Resort, located in historic downtown Jackson, Mississippi is our conference hotel. The Marriott Hotel link is on the web site. Room rates at the Marriott are $117.00 per night. We do have additional overflow hotel rooms within walking distance and through shuttle services. Prices may vary and there is an accommodation for your traveling concerns and budget.

MUSIC is called the universal language. Music transcends boundaries to bond people even thousands of miles apart. The south is traditionally known for our musical heritage, therefore, we will have guest performers to share this musical connection. You don’t want to miss the Monday night barbecue, blue jeans and Blues mixer. Our Tuesday night banquet will honor Dr. Joanne Brown Morton and her accomplishments and contributions to corrections and working with female offenders.

Christopher Epps, Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner and the national and state steering committee welcome you to Mississippi for the 13th National Workshop on Adult and Juvenile Female Offenders. Save the dates October 10-14, 2009. For additional information, please contact:
